Ernest O. Hernlem

September 2, 1927 — June 3, 2019

Ernest Orrin Hernlem, 91, of Red Wing, died on Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Lake City Care Center. He was born on September 2, 1927 in Goodhue County to Fredrick and Hattie (Bremer) Hernlem. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School and served in the United States Army from 1955 until 1957. Ernest was united in marriage to Marlene Voth on December 28, 1958, at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Goodhue. He farmed for 14 years, worked at Red Wing Wood Products Company for six and a half years, and at Carlson Store Fixtures for 25 years, until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church and served on the church council and the church school board. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, flower gardening, reading, and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene of Red Wing; three children, Cynthia Degener, Gina Hernlem, and Brad (Birgita Jean) Hernlem; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Fred Hernlem Jr. and John Hernlem.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2019 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Todd Engel officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Burnside Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to St. John's Lutheran Church, School or donor's choice.
