Frederick R. "Fred" Heimberg

June 4, 1940 — May 13, 2019

Frederick R. Heimberg, age 78 of Pine Island died on May 13, 2019 at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Rochester - Methodist Campus. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Zwingli United Church of Christ in Berne with Pastor Karen Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Berne Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Mahler Chapel in Pine Island and on Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Fred was born on June 4, 1940 in New Haven Township, Olmsted County, MN to Fred Sr. and his wife Florence (Robb) Heimberg. He went to school in Byron, moved to Pine Island in 1959 and helped his dad farm. He drove Feedmill for Olaf Ronningen and then started driving a canned milk truck for Lyle Pinkerton. Fred bought the route and truck and hauled can milk for farmers to the Minnesota Cheese Producers. After Land-O-Lakes bought out Minnesota Cheese Producers, Fred drove milk transports from Pine Island to area towns such as Spring Valley, Dalbo, Caledonia and Luck, WI. When he retired he had over a million miles accident free and still he was able to help others along the road.
Fred enjoyed wood working, making bird feeders and bird houses, but he especially enjoyed his lathe where he could make tulip vases, snowmen and bowls. He also enjoyed bird watching at the feeders and commented that until he retired, he didn't know that there were so many different birds. Fred was also known for making and demonstrating how to make Bratseli, a Swiss cookie for the Berne Swissfest.
On May 1, 1964, Fred was married to his sweetheart Rosemary Kirgis. They were married for fifty five years. In 1975 they bought her family's farm, where they had dairy cows and raised their three children.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife Rosemary; their children, daughter, Connie Dose - deceased (LaVerne), Richard (Tammy) Heimberg of Dodge Center and Roger (Diana) Heimberg of Claremont; grandchildren, Michael (Cadie) Dose, Ricky (Jessie) Heimberg, DeLaney (Korey) Bradford, Kimberly (Ryan) Wadley, Megan Heimberg and Melinda Heimberg; also Fred's hearts delights were his great-grandchildren, Michael and Cadie's: Milo and Lesley, Kimberly and Ryan's: Raelynn, Ricky and Jessie's: Kyra, Ricky III and Madison; DeLaney and Korey's: Keagan, Lily, Landon, Jace and Rhys and Megan's: Maddic.
Fred is also survived by two sisters, Rozena (Tom) Rydstrom of Brighton, CO and Cathy (Marlyn) Swee of Rochester; brother, Joe (Geri) Heimberg of Pine Island; sister-in-law, Avis (Emery) Jackson of Bishop, CA; brothers-in-law, Dale Gille of Tampa, FL, Gary (Linda) Kirgis of Spring Hill, FL, Grant (Penny) Kirgis and Ross (Pam) Kirgis, both of Rochester; aunt, Ruth Robb; uncle, Duane Robb and many nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by their daughter, Connie Dose; parents, Fred and Florence (Robb) Heimberg; his wife's parents, Ludwig and M. Elaine Stucki Kirgis and his nephew, Brett Kirgis.
Memorials can be directed to Zwingli United Church of Christ in Berne, his church for fifty years.
