Gaylen Ralph O'Ray Hoven, 91, of Roscoe Township, Goodhue County, died Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island, Minn.
Gaylen was born on his family farm in Roscoe Township to Otto and Minnie (Gronseth) Hoven on November 10, 1927. He attended school at District 79 in Roscoe Center through eighth grade, then transferred to Wanamingo High School where he graduated in 1945. After graduation, Gaylen farmed with his dad and hauled canned milk for the Roscoe Center Butter & Cheese Association from 1951-1954. He also he served as a board member for the association and continued to farm with his son, Brian, and grandson, Bart, until 2016.
On May 25, 1957, he married Frances Rokke at United Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. Gaylen was a lifetime member of Stordahl Lutheran Church, where he was an active member of the cemetery board, church council and choir. Along with his wife, Gaylen organized a singing group called "The Villagers." For 20 years the group sang at various events in the area. He also sang as a member of the Roscoe Male Quartet.
Gaylen loved bowling and bowled throughout southeastern Minnesota for 70 years and participated in several state and open national tournaments. He shared his wife's love of horses and enjoyed driving their horse and carriages in parades.
He is survived by a son, Brian (Robyn); two grandchildren, Bart (Emily Gillard) and Blaire; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances (Rokke) Hoven; parents, Otto and Minnie (Gronseth) Hoven; and his sister, Mavis (Hoven) Ellingson.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 5th from 3 to 6 p.m. at Mahn Family Funeral Home-Larson Chapel in Zumbrota, and an hour before the service at the church. The service will be held at Stordahl Lutheran Church on Sunday, January 6th at 1:30 p.m with Pastor Kathleen Lowery officiating.
Memorials are preferred to the Stordahl Lutheran Church Cemetery Board.
