Genevieve Lutzke, née Simonson, 92, of Rochester, MN, died early Saturday morning, April 28th, 2018, at The Homestead of Rochester. A memorial service will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 2124 Viola Road NE, Rochester, at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3rd, with Pastor Ben Loven officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. A private family burial service will be held at Grandview Memorial Gardens.
Genevieve Simonson was born in Fargo, ND, on August 6, 1925, and grew up in Grand Forks, ND. She graduated from Central High School and attended the University of North Dakota. She transferred to St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, graduating in 1947. After graduation she taught high school in Rose Creek, MN.
Genevieve married Paul Martin Lutzke of Prairie du Chien, WI, on December 28, 1947. Throughout their marriage, the Lutzkes lived in several communities in North Dakota and Minnesota, coming to Rochester in 1965. Genevieve taught at Aldrich Memorial Nursery School for seven years. In 1972, she joined the staff of Rochester Area Vocational Technical Institute, teaching Child Development. In 1987, Genevieve became Director of Aldrich Memorial Nursery School until retirement. During her tenure as Director, she oversaw construction of the school at its present location in NW Rochester. Professional and community affiliations included Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, MEA, MEAYC, League of Women Voters, Sons of Norway, ELCA Lutheran Church and other local groups. Genevieve loved music, playing piano, books, pets, travel, hobbies and crafts. She cherished the fun times together with their card-playing friends, as well as the many trips she and Paul took throughout the U.S. and the world with friends and family.
Genevieve is survived by four sons, Paul E. (Linda) Lutzke of Maple Lake, MN; Steven M. (Gayla) Lutzke of Allen, TX; David L. (Diane) Lutzke of Plainview, MN; Timothy M. (Lori) Lutzke of Rochester, MN; one daughter, Susan M. Lutzke Hoff (Cynthia Alverado) of Portland, OR; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents, Elmer M. and Sophia M. Simonson (née Simonsen); and her two brothers, Clifford Simonson and Dr. Donald B. Simonson. Genevieve had a warm, caring and loving nature and will be deeply missed by the family and all who knew her.
Memorials are preferred to Aldrich Memorial Nursery School or your favorite charity. Flowers may be delivered directly to the church on the day of the service, Thursday, May 3rd, prior to 1:00 p.m.
