Harlen L. Pahl

Harlen L. Pahl, age 89 of Pine Island went quietly home to be with his Savior on Friday, April 12, 2019. The funeral service will be on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 11:00 AM at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Mazeppa with Pastor Alan Horn officiating. Burial will be in the Mazeppa Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, April 19, 2019 from 3:00 - 6:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Harlen Lowell Pahl was born on May 7, 1929 in Red Wing, MN to Rudolph Johannes and Esther Margaret (Reese) Pahl. On May 21, 1929 he was baptized at the family home in rural Zumbrota by Pastor Paul E. Horn. Harlen grew up on the farm in rural Zumbrota and was confirmed into faith on April 18, 1943 at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. Harlen worked as a painter during the summers of his high school years and he also joined the National Guard and spent two weeks each summer at Camp Ripley. During his senior year, Harlen was honorably discharged for health reasons. After graduating from Zumbrota High School in 1947, Harlen started doing carpentry work. He studied under a Norwegian craftsman becoming very skilled and particular with his work. For over fifty years Harlen shared those skills, remodeling and building many area homes.
On October 20, 1950 he married Vernetta Mariann Smith and became a member of St. John's Ev. Church in Mazeppa. Harlen was an active member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, serving as council president, ushering and in many other capacities.
Harlen was also an active member of his community and served in many areas including, Pine Island Zoning and Planning commission, Zumbro Watershed, PTA, 4H leader and, portraying Santa at community functions. Harlen and Vernetta received the Goodhue County Senior Citizens Volunteer Award and served as Grand Marshalls during the Pine Cheese Festival Parade.
Harlen enjoyed going to plays and concerts, attending his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's sporting and school events, puttering with his model trains, collecting toy trucks and tractors and spending time with family and friends.
Harlen was a loving father to ten children, teaching the contentment found in hard work and a generous spirit.
Harlen is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Vernetta; children, Lowellene (Joseph) Jackson of Blaine, Vernice Glamm of LaCrosse, WI, Wendell (Jeanne) Pahl and Juanita (Brian) Morris, both of Pine Island, Rosealene (Richard) Markham of Big Lake, Kevin (Debra) Pahl of Coon Rapids, Vernon (Kathryn) Pahl of Pine Island, Valerie (Rann) Loppnow of Lake City, Roger (Debra) Pahl and Larry (Kimberly) Pahl, both of Pine Island; twenty three grandchildren; twenty nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Glennes and Darren (Linda) Pahl, both of Zumbrota; sister-in-law, Virginia Pahl of Zumbrota and many nieces and nephews.
Harlen was preceded in death by his brother, Duane Pahl; son-in-law, Paul Glamm and his parents.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Mazeppa or St. John's Lutheran Church - Ladies Aid.
