Janet K. Christopherson, 93, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at her home at Deer Crest. She was born November 2, 1924, to Louis and Anna (Diercks) Schafer and grew up on the family farm in Belvidere near Goodhue. She attended country school there until entering high school in Red Wing, graduating in 1942. After completing the Red Wing Teachers Training program in 1943, she taught in one room schools in Featherstone, Kenyon and Hay Creek. On May 31, 1947, she married Allen Christopherson of Beldenville, Wisconsin, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Goodhue. They resided in Burnside where they raised their family, and where Janet continued to live until moving to Deer Crest in 2007.
As a member of United Lutheran Church since 1950, Janet was involved in many activities (WELCA, Esther Circle, teaching Sunday school, Social Concerns, Altar Guild and quilting). She also served as president of Lutheran Brotherhood #8537 and received their "Outstanding Performance & Excellence in Volunteerism" award in 1977. In 1999 she was the recipient of the Red Wing Rotary Club's "Service Above Self" award. Janet was a clerical worker for the Red Wing Police Department from 1973 until retiring in 2007.
Her other interests included sewing, piano playing, participating in the Mississippi Shuffle as a cancer survivor and guiding tours at the Goodhue County History Center. Quilting was her special hobby, and over the years she made many quilts and wall hangings for family members- "quilts made with love age with time, but never lose their warmth".
