John Franklin Philo, age 73, of Rochester passed away peacefully on Saturday March 17, 2018 with his son and daughter by his side. He was born on September 13, 1944 to John R. and Jean (Curtis) Philo in Des Moines, Iowa. Moving from New Hampton, Iowa to Rochester in 1958, John graduated from John Marshall High School in 1963, where he excelled as a student athlete earning varsity letters in football, wrestling and Golf. He was appointed to the Naval Academy and graduated from Winona State University with an education degree.
John married the love of his life Vicki (Raymond) Philo on January 29, 1968 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua Iowa.
He was an educator starting in Wisconsin; moving back to Rochester in 1978 to teach at Byron High School. Throughout his life John also tutored many using his math skills.
John was an avid outdoorsman in his early years. He loved to hunt and fish with his son Jeremy and many friends. He enjoyed many trips to Myrtle Beach SC to visit his granddaughters. Rumor has it that on those road trips John and Vicki would sing to those "oldies" all the way across the country. John and Vicki loved to entertain family and friends, all were always welcome with plenty of laughs and love and never left hungry as cooking was another passion.
John is survived by his children, sons, John P. (Jess) Philo of Rochester, Jeremy P. (Kelli) Philo of Myrtle Beach, SC and daughter Jenni L. Philo of Rochester. Grandchildren, Taylor and Jordan Philo of Myrtle Beach, SC and Jacob and Joel Philo of Rochester. His mother, Jean Philo of Rochester. Brothers, Jim(Kathie) Philo of New Hampton , Iowa, Jerry (Lori) Philo of Rochester and Jack (Yvonne) Philo of Rochester and sister Jeanette (Steve)Laugen of Rochester, Brother in law , Fred (Mauna) Raymond of Rochester and sister in law, Pat Younge of Rochester, many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife Vicki, his father John R Philo and In-laws Alan and Betty Raymond.
The memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel. Friends may call one hour before the service, and a reception will be held following the service. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery - Preston, MN at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Mayo Foundation for Research
