Karl Lunder

Reverend Karl Bernard Lunder, 69, of Red Wing, died Saturday, March 12, 2016 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. He was born on July 1, 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Bernard and Signe (Larson) Lunder. He went to grade school in Upsala, Minnesota, graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1964 and Augsburg College in 1968. He attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Seattle and Northwestern Lutheran Seminary in St. Paul. He was ordained on June 14, 1970 at Christ Chapel at Gustavas Adolphus College in St. Peter. On March 23, 1968 he married Diane Martenson at Vasa Lutheran Church. Karl served as parish pastor at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Palo, Minnesota, United Lutheran Church in Gilbert, Minnesota, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ipoh, Malaysia, Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler, Minnesota and First Lutheran Church in Hinckley, Minnesota. He retired on July 1, 2012 after 38 years of ministry.

His joys in life included golfing, hunting, fishing, wood working and spending time on the farm. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and 10 grandchildren. He was a member of the Goodhue Lions Club and he volunteered for Faith in Action, as a driver and with the library program. He was a chaplain for the Red Wing Police Department and was an active member of United Lutheran Church in Red Wing.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; two sons, Eric and Ellen Lunder and their children, Leo and Ethan of St. Paul; Matthew and Brigid Lunder and their children, Maria, Samuel, Elijah and Abigail of Mount Lake Terrance, Washington; one daughter, Rachel and Jeff Stenerson and their children, Luke, Anthony, Jarrett and Jacey of Tyler, Minnesota; two sisters, Naomi and Ken Holmgren of Glenwood, Minnesota and Helen and Philip Sundquist of St. Cloud; brother-in-law, Duane Martenson of Vasa; father-in-law, Lloyd Martenson of Vasa and many nieces, nephews and friends. He touched the lives of many people wherever he served and will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17, 2016 at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Rev. Karl Rydholm and Reverend David Berggren officiating. Burial will be in the Vasa Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
