Kathryn Elaine Fitzgerald, 74, of Red Wing, died Saturday, January 20, 2018, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester. She was born July 30, 1943 in Durand, Wisconsin and grew up in Pepin, Wisconsin, where she graduated from high school in 1961. She went on to work at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. On August 3, 1963 she married Jack Fitzgerald and the couple made their home in rural Goodhue. She worked at Zumco in Zumbrota until 1977 and then at the Red Wing Health Care Center for 36 years, retiring in 2013. Throughout her life, she took great pride in her work. She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Goodhue. Kathryn enjoyed spending time with her friends and socializing with them at Bev's and Liberty's. She loved being a grandmother and her potato salad and stuffing were infamous. Kathryn was a strong, independent, and spunky woman who had a huge heart and was always an advocate for the underdog. Her lifelong passion (and greatest weakness) was her love for animals. Her generosity was evident in her last wish, of donating her body to science at the Mayo Clinic.
She is survived by her children, Jackie (Jim Shull) Fitzgerald-Shull of East Bethel, Jennifer (Jack) Schwab of Red Wing, Perry Fitzgerald and Jason Fitzgerald both of Goodhue; grandchildren, Brittany (Robert) Hardinge of Australia, Cheyenne Schwab of Red Wing, Lance Hazeman of Goodhue, Justin Hazeman of St. Paul, Brianna and Jence Fitzgerald both of Goodhue; 2 brothers, Arnie (Sheila) Mercer of Nelson, Wisc. and Jim (Pam) Mercer of Stockholm, Wisc and her bulldog and best pal, Mack.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack in 1998 and her parents.
