Leon Avery Markham

March 27, 1931 — November 17, 2018

Leon ‘Buzz' A. Markham, age 87, of Mantorville, formerly of Pine Island, was taken home by the Lord on Saturday, November 17, 2018. The funeral service will be Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 11:00 am at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kasson - 600 8th Ave. with Pastor Dean Gunn officiating. The visitation will be Friday, November 23, 2018 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Mahler Chapel in Pine Island and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in the Pine Island Cemetery with Military Honors.

Leon Avery Markham was born on March 27, 1931 in Marion Township to Bernie and Mabel (Stoppel) Markham. Buzz married Virginia Krause on June 15, 1951 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island. He farmed on the family farm in Oronoco then for Hess Lumber in Pine Island. Buzz worked for Crenlo in Rochester before being drafted into the United States Army on February 4, 1953 and was honorably discharged on February 3, 1955. During his service he attended basic training at Camp Gordon, GA. and served in the 196 Fort Richardson, Alaska Territories in the message center. He was very proud of his service in the military. Buzz returned to Crenlo, and then worked at Pine Planting in Pine Island until his retirement. After retiring they lived on Cedar Lake in Aitkin, where they had many gatherings, and taught his sons and grandchildren to fish. After heart surgery they moved back to Pine Island. They traveled to Branson, took many trips to visit his army buddy, and took many bus trips to the East coast, West coast and Canada.

Buzz was baptized on July 24, 1956 and confirmed July 24, 1956 at St. Paul Lutheran Church where he was an active member. He was also a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oronoco and recently a member of Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kasson.

Buzz enjoyed dancing, playing cards, fishing and spending time with family.

Buzz is survived by his loving wife Virginia; sons, Richard (Rosealene), Michael (Candice), Kenneth (Tamara) Markham; grandchildren, Rachel (Ross) Collins, Renee (Bernard III) Hancock, Chad (Sarah) Johnson, Troy Markham, Jamie (Troy) Andrist, Christopher (LeNae) Markham, Cory (Mark) Markham, and Katie Hassan; 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; brother, Bernard Markham; sister-in-law, Eunice Markham; and many nieces and nephews.

Buzz was preceded in death by his brothers, Henry (Tessabelle), Vernon, Leonard (Myra), William (Hazel) Markham; sister, Doris (Gaylord) Kautz; sister-in-law, Betty Markham.

In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials are preferred to Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church or Heartland Hospice Care.
