Milo Richard Gilliland

Milo Richard Gilliland, 81 of Red Wing, died Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 26, 1931 in Bay City, Wisconsin, son of James M. and Wilma L. (Foster) Gilliland. He graduated from high school in Seattle, Washington. He returned to Bay City where he first met Ruth. On December 16, 1949, Milo married Ruth Lemmerhirt in River Falls Wisconsin. In 1951, Milo enlisted in the US Marine Corp. He was stationed in Oceanside, California during the Korean Conflict and was a machine gun instructor. In 1953, he was honorably discharged. Milo and Ruth moved to Red Wing where Milo began his career on the hide floor at S.B. Foot Tanning. Eventually, he moved all the way up to the Manufacturing Superintendent of the entire plant. When he turned 63, he retired from his 44 year career at S.B. Foot Tanning. After retiring, he took up a life of fishing on Lake Pepin, hunting and spending time with his grandkids and friends. His grandchildren and fishing were his passions. Milo was a member of United Lutheran Church, Red Wing Elks Lodge # 845 and the Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54. He was a wonderful man who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He was survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ruth; two daughters, Catherine (Donald) Bee of Stockholm, WI, and Mitzi (Jeff) Bjork of Goodhue; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, J. Richard Gilliland and James W. Gilliland and two sons-in-law, Jerry Wallin and Lyle Warrington.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2013 at United Lutheran Church, with Reverend Justin Boeding officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
