Orland J. "Orly" Walstad

Orland J. Walstad, age 86 of the Lake Zumbro area died on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at the Mayo Clinic Hospital - Rochester, St. Marys Campus. A memorial service will be on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with Pastor Wayne D. Schoch officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Zumbrota Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Thursday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Orland John Walstad was born on April 27, 1933 in Minneola Township, Goodhue County, MN to Joseph and Mabel (Stromme) Walstad. Orly grew up in rural Zumbrota and graduated from Wanamingo High School in 1951. Orly enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 14, 1953, served with the Seabees during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on July 5, 1955. Orly returned to the Zumbrota area and started his career as a heavy equipment operator for Ramstad Construction, which was later purchased by Schumacher Excavating. On May 12, 1956 he married Verna M. Borgschatz in Zumbrota. They made their home in Zumbrota. Verna died on September 9, 1985 and in 1987, Orly purchased his home on Lake Zumbro. Orly retired in 2011 at the age of 78. Orly was a lifetime member and past-commander of Stary-Yerka VFW Post #5727, Christ Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and Rochester Water Ski Club. Orly was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, enjoyed sports, going to the casino, camping, traveling, cooking and baking and telling stories.
Orly is survived by his daughters, JoEllen (Kerry) Frederixon and Karen (Mike) Nord, both of Zumbrota and Darla (Mark Husbyn) Jarvinen of Wanamingo; grandchildren, Kasey Manuel, Adam Frederixon, Joel Varner, Jamie Varner, Kirby Henson, Skylee Jarvinen and Whitney Ellefson; great-grandchildren, Tracyn Eytcheson, Harper Frederixon, George Manuel, Treyson Varner, Finnick Varner and Ariel Ordalen; brother, Marvin Walstad of Zumbrota; very special friend, Mary Ehlenfeldt of Pine Island and many nieces and nephews.
Orly was preceded in death by his wife, Verna; parents, son-in-law, David Jarvinen and sister-in-law, Clarice Walstad.
