Richard "Dick" Allen Kosec, 84, of Red Wing, died January 7, 2018 at his home with his wife by his side. He was born September 22, 1933, to Daniel and Eleanor (Johnson) Kosec in Red Wing. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1951 before enlisting in the U. S. Army, serving during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge in 1954, he worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and NSP before beginning his career with the Red Wing Fire Department. He worked with department for 36 years, retiring as Fire Chief on January 1, 1996. He married Carol Eckblad on February 25, 1956 and the couple raised their three children in Red Wing.
He was a member of the Leo C Peterson American Legion, Post 54 and served as a past commander, the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association where he served as a past president and the Red Wing Elks Lodge BPOE #845. He was also a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Dick was an avid reader, he enjoyed cooking and was a football fan with a special enthusiasm for the Minnesota Gophers. He and Carol loved spending time together wintering in Florida. Most of all, he loved being around his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their events.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Lori (Steven) Johnson of Champlin and Christine (Wes) Hayes of Red Wing; grandchildren, Kevin and Ryan Hayes and Jason and Allison Johnson; great-grandchildren, Morgyn and Mykah Johnson. He was preceded in death by his son, Grant Kosec; his parents, one sister, Mitzi Simonson and his dog, Sam.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, January 12, 2018 at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Tristan English officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Leo C. Peterson American Legion. Visitation will be 5 - 7p.m., Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with a Legion prayer service at 7 p.m. A visitation will also be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to St. Jude's or the American Diabetes Association.
