Russell A. Oettel

September 7, 1930 — January 21, 2019

Russell A. Oettel passed away peacefully, supported by his family, friends, and hospice nursing care on Monday January 21st at the Lake City Care Center, Lake City, Minn. He was born on September 7th, 1930 in Duluth MN to Ruth and Robert Oettel. He graduated from Hermantown High School in 1949. In 1953 he married Jeanne Delores Fossum. He also served his country with the National Guard before returning to college. He graduated from The University of Minnesota with a degree in forestry in 1961. Upon graduation, he worked as a forester in Upper Michigan and Northern Wisconsin before settling in Door County where he worked for The American Can Company and then Green Bay Packaging. He retired in 1998 at which time he and Jeanne planted and maintained an apple orchard which served as a favorite gathering place for his grandchildren, extended family and friends until 2005 when they moved to Red Wing, Minn. Russ and Jeanne loved to travel and visit new places and meet new people. Following the death of his beloved wife Jeanne, he invested his time and talents to serve his Red Wing community. Russ was a supportive and loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He liked to keep busy and enjoyed several hobbies. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and more recently with his special friend Glee Robbins.
He is survived by his son Kurt (Barbara) Oettel of LaCrosse Wis., and four grandchildren, Bailey Oettel of Lincoln, Neb., Sydney Oettel and McKenna Oettel of La Crosse, and Andrew Oettel of Green Bay, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ruth and Robert Oettel, his younger brother Ronnie and his son Eric. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jeanne.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, February 2, 2019 at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Karl Rydholm officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at church. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to: Trees For Tomorrow, 519 E Sheridan St. Eagle River, WI 54521.
