Ruth Anna Grote

April 30, 1918 — June 27, 2019

Ruth Anna (Matthees) Grote, died on Thursday, June 27, 2019. She passed away peacefully at her home in Crystal, MN, after a long and wonderful life at the age of 101. Ruth was born on April 30, 1918, in Red Wing, MN, to Rudy and Emile Matthees. She grew up on her family's dairy farm in Goodhue with her siblings, Reynold and Irene. The lessons she learned on the farm led her to a life of community service and caring for others. Ruth went to school in rural Goodhue and worked as a maid for wealthy
families in Minneapolis before she met and married Lorenz Grote on January 14, 1939. They moved to Red Wing and later to Hay Creek and raised three sons, Kenneth, Gary, and David. The Grotes were known for their enormous vegetable garden, sweet dancing moves, and throwing horseshoes on Sunday afternoon. Ruth served others with the Ladies Aide at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek. She also worked as a meat wrapper at Erickson's. Lorenz died in December, 1977. In 1978, Ruth moved to Red Wing and then to Minneapolis in 1999. Ruth volunteered at ARC's Value Village for many years and received numerous awards for her efforts. She even spent one summer with grandson Eric putting on his very own summer camp! Her sweet demeanor hid a fierce competitive streak. Ruth is known as the pool shark of Dover Hills, the cover-all bingo champ at The Heathers, and always winning at cribbage and euchre. Everyone wanted to be on her team!
Survivors include sons, Gary Grote and David Grote (Kathy Miller), grandchildren Darcy (Bernard) Dickson, Richard (Patty Nilsen) Grote, Judi (Tim Thompson) Grote, Chris Grote, Heather (Dustin) Hoaglin, Eric
(Jenni Morobitto) Grote, eight great-grandchildren, and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lorenz; son, Kenneth Grote; brother Reynold and sister Irene.
