Sandra Jean Clafton

Sandra Jean Clafton, 71, of Red Wing, died on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at St. Marys Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Mankato on October 10, 1947 to George and Mildred (Erickson) Stotz. Sandy graduated from St. Peter High School in 1965. She attended Mankato State College where she received a bachelor's degree in nursing in 1969. On May 16, 1970, Sandy was united in marriage to Gordon Clafton. While he served in the military, Sandy worked as a civilian nurse at the William Beaumont Hospital in El Paso, Texas and at the Hahn Air Base in Hahn, Germany. They returned to St. Paul for two years, where she worked as the supervisor of the OB/GYN department at St. Joseph's Hospital. They then moved to Wilmar, where Sandy worked as a nurse at the Wilmar State Hospital. The two moved back to St. Peter and Sandy worked at St. Peter State Hospital, before moving to Grand Rapids. In Grand Rapids, Sandy took a leave of absence to start their family. She worked at Leisure Hills Nursing Home from 1985-1990, before the family moved to Red Wing in 1990. In Red Wing, Sandy worked for 19 years as a Goodhue County Public Health nurse before retiring in 2009. As a nurse, she had a passion for helping young and single women prepare for motherhood. Sandy enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and children, and attended all of their sporting events and other activities. She loved reading, movies, flowers, shopping, playing games on her "machine," or iPad, and attending Tim McGraw concerts.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon of Red Wing; two children, Bill Clafton of Rosemount and Kimberly (Dana) Chandler of Golden, Colorado; four grandchildren, Landen, Ella, and Georgiahna Chandler, and Graham Clafton; and sister, Susan (Charles) Pogemiller of Minneapolis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mildred Stotz.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
