Sara Kaye Sterling-Voigt, 48, of Red Wing, died suddenly at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. She was born on May 10, 1969 to Jerome "Jerry" and Mary Sterling (Atkinson) in Owatonna. She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1987. She went on to Winona State and then on to Vo-Tech in Iowa where she received her LPN. While out of state she was responsible for the best thing to ever come out of Iowa, her son, Cameron. She would later receive her RN at Minnesota South East Technical College in Red Wing. She worked at several nursing homes in the area and was the director of nursing at the Red Wing Health Center for 10 years before taking a position as a case manager at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. On October 3, 1998, Sara married AJ Voigt, giving him, not only her hand in marriage, but also the best son he could have asked for. Sara was the first female member of the Red Wing Elks Club, BPOE #845. Her competitive nature made her an active supporter of her son's high school athletics, cheering him on through the football, hockey and baseball season. It also kept family gatherings interesting. She was strong-willed and straight forward. You always knew where you stood with Sara. But she was also immensely compassionate and ready to put others ahead of herself. She was a wonderful nurse; supportive, caring and hard working. She also enjoyed cooking and baking - especially if someone else was willing to clean up. She loved to get together with family and friends, whatever the occasion. Sara was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend. Most recently, she also added "proud nana" to that list as she was head-over-heels for her new grandson, Kaysen.
She will be missed by many, including her husband, AJ Voigt; her son, Cam (Tori Sage); grandson, Kaysen; sister, Tara (Jesse) Nelson; nieces, Kyli, Sydnee, Tenley, Ramsey and Jensyn; maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Catherine Atkinson; brothers-in-law, Bruce (Beth) Voigt and Jim (Jamie) Voigt; sister-in-law, Ruth (Ralph) Fitschen, all of Red Wing; as well as many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other family and many friends, including the Village.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her paternal grandparents, Wendell and Bernice Sterling; mother and father-in-law, Wally and Irene Voigt.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, September 2, 2017 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home with Father Jason Kern officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Friday, September 1, 2017 at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
