Terrance Gene Shelstad

Terrance Gene Shelstad, age 88, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2019 in Red Wing, MN. Terry was born on November 28, 1930 in Red Wing to Joyce and Estella (Gombert) Shelstad. He grew up in Goodhue, MN, graduating from high school with the class of 1948. Terry began his four years of service in the United States Air Force in 1951 and was trained as a right belly gunner on the B36 airplane. He was a member of the 28th Wing Association at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD. Terry was united in marriage to Marlene Johnson on December 29, 1956.

Terry graduated from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, in 1959 with a BS in Economics. He worked for Paul Lawrence Realty for several years as an accountant and insurance/real estate agent and in 1964 went to work for the Red Wing Shoe Company, where he was the office manager and assistant secretary/treasurer. He retired in 1988. Terry was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Terry was a loyal son of his hometown of Goodhue and a proud supporter of Red Wing, where he spent all of his adult life. He was a member of the Red Wing Country Club (President in 1974), Mississippi National Golf Course and Frontenac Golf Course. He was a life member of both the Elks Club and the American Legion, where he served as Commander ('95 and '96) and as the financial officer for several years. He was a former member of the Lion's Club, where he also served as President. He was a member of the Red Wing Ambassadors, the Red Wing Booster Club, where he served as treasurer, and was also the Secretary/Treasurer of the Red Wing Shoe Company Employee Assistance Program for 11 years.

Terry led a full life, excelling in a number of sports. He was on the first football team for Goodhue, and spent many years participating in baseball. He was a coach for Little League and American Legion teams, and also a player for the Goodhue baseball team and the Red Wing Aces. He was an avid pool player, bowler and golfer and enjoyed a good game of cards. He spent many years wintering in Lake Havasu, AZ. He will be deeply missed by his family and his close circle of friends.

Survived by his loving wife of almost 63 years, Marlene, along with children Diane (John) Huston of Shorewood, MN, Jeanne (Cornelius) Van Dyke of Riverside, IL, Karen (Mark) Castner of Rosemount, MN and Jeffrey (Heather) Shelstad of Chanhassen, MN. Also survived by grandchildren Rob (Elise), Tom and David Huston, Adam and Heather Castner and Jackson and Ava Shelstad, along with great-granddaughter Logan Huston. Further survived by his sister Genevieve Robbins of Rochester, MN, his brother Bill Shelstad of Goodhue, MN, and sister-in-law Mary Shelstad of Wanamingo, MN, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. Terry was particularly close to his late sister-in law Shirley's sons Dan and Tom Niebeling, and their children.

Preceded in death by his parents, his brother John (Smokey) Shelstad, and his brother-in-law John Robbins.

Visitation will be Sunday December 1st from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, 602 Plum St., Red Wing. There will be a Legion Prayer Service at 5:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday December 2nd at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 435 West 7th St., Red Wing at 11:00 am, with visitation at the Church one hour prior to the service. There will be a private family interment at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the American Legion Post #54, the Elks Scholarship Fund, St. Joseph Catholic Church, or donor's choice.
