Thomas J. Gerdes

Thomas J. Gerdes, 84, of Red Wing, passed away on December 16, 2019 at home. He was born in Red Wing on February 28, 1935 to Ralph and Gladys (Parrot) Gerdes. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1956. He enlisted into the United States Airforce on November 5, 1956 and served until he was honorably discharged on October 21, 1960. Thomas married Joyce Woodford on June 20, 1959 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and they made their home in Red Wing. He was employed with Pittsburg Plate and Glass and then ADM for 42 years, retiring in 1997. After retirement he and Joyce spent a few winters in Arizona. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Red Wing Wildlife League. He often went out of his way to help friends, neighbors and family and will be remembered for being a great dad, grandpa and great-grandpa.
He is survived by wife Joyce of Red Wing; son, Jim (Sue) Gerdes of Red Wing; granddaughter, Samantha (Ryan) Cardell of Red Wing; great-granddaughter, Tyler McGrath and son-in-law, Tim (Peggy) Erie of Vasa. He was preceded in death by daughter, Judy Erie; his parents, Ralph and Gladys; sister, Barb Janisch and an infant sister.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, December 22, 2019 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Rev. Michael Dobbins officiating.
