Timothy Joseph Nevitt

December 7, 1954 — August 24, 2019

Timothy Joseph Nevitt, 64, of Red Wing, died unexpectedly on Saturday, August 24, 2019, at the family cabin in Danbury, Wisconsin.

Tim was born in Blacksburg, VA on December 7, 1954, the third child of Jean and Michael Nevitt. The family relocated shortly after Tim's birth to Wheaton, Illinois where he attended school, graduating in 1972 from Wheaton High School where he played varsity soccer. As an adolescent he frequented the Adler Planetarium in Chicago and built a reflecting telescope, grinding and polishing the mirror himself. He was often found on the roof of his family home observing the stars and clouds, and delighting as big
thunderstorms rolled in off the prairie.

Tim got his BA degree from the University of Chicago. His first professional job was early morning weatherman for a Chicago radio station. Tim went on to Pennsylvania State University where he obtained a PhD in Meteorology. Tim was a talented scientist with a passionate curiosity about our world, and a deep continuing interest in astronomy and meteorology.

In 1986 Tim went to work at the 3M Company. He worked in the Group Laboratory with the Transportation and Electronics Business Group as a Staff Scientist. During his career at 3M he received many awards including several for Circle of Technical Excellence. This is a peer nominated internal award for technical contributions and accomplishment. Tim's name appears on over 50 patents on which he was an integral, important part of the development team.

In 1988 Tim married Susan Flueger in a ceremony on the banks of the mighty Mississippi. Tim found great joy in being a busy, caring husband. After living for a time in the twin-cities Tim and Susan built a house high on a hill in Red Wing eventually expanding their farm to over 150 acres with a machine shed, tractors, miles of fence, wild flowers, horses and hay fields.

In 1996 Tim was thrilled to become a father when son Jamie came to them. Then the family was blessed again when son Jack came in 1999. Tim was an amazing father who enjoyed all aspects of fatherhood including coaching soccer, becoming a hockey enthusiast, teaching Math Masters, and faith formation at St. Joseph Church. Tim enjoyed farming with his wife and sons and sharing with them his love for nature and the outdoors. Tim took delight in boating on the Mississippi with his own family and his extended family.

Tim enjoyed many friends including those on the team he played with in a YMCA volley ball league as well as a Red Wing golf league, and his fishing buddies. He was always ready to be actively involved at Flueger Springs whether to repair, renovate or party.

Tim's energy, exuberance and zest for life were lifelong qualities and gave rise to his very successful adult life as a husband, father, scientist, inventor, and friend. Tim was an enthusiastic listener, always interested in other people's lives and opinions and found joy in whatever topic was being discussed. He challenged others by asking questions and encouraged them to look at things differently. Tim was the kind of passionate and thoughtful person that our world so desperately needs. He willingly shared his inquisitive mind and warm heart. Our lives and the world around him were enriched by his energy
and enthusiasm for life and his unconditional love for family and friends.

Timothy Joseph Nevitt is survived by his beloved spouse Susan Flueger Nevitt, and sons Jamie and Jack; siblings Carole (John) Machek, Michael (Eileen) Nevitt, and Rob (Donna Portner) Nevitt. Tim will be forever missed by his many nieces, nephews and all those who would stand with Tim under the night sky as he pointed out stars, constellations and planets.
