Verna R. McWaters, age 93 of Zumbrota died on Friday, July 05, 2019 at her residence. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with Pastor Wayne D. Schoch officiating. Private family burial will be in the Zumbrota Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday for one hour prior to the service e at the church.
Verna Ruth Horn was born on April 12, 1926 in Eden Township, Brown County, MN to Rev. Paul E. and Eugenie (nee Luethe) Horn. Verna was baptized on May 9, 1926. As a baby her family moved to Zumbrota. She grew up in Zumbrota and graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1943. Verna was the Homecoming Queen and Zumbrota Fire Queen and this qualified her to participate in the Fire Queen Pageant at the St. Paul Winter Carnival. Verna continued her education in Minneapolis, earning an Associate Degree in Laboratory Technology. Verna worked at Gunderson Clinic in LaCrosse, WI until her marriage on June 5, 1948 to Duane "Babe" McWaters at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. They made their home on the McWaters family farm. Verna was a farm homemaker and raised her six children there, later working as a legal secretary. Verna was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Minnesota Vikings and Gophers. She also enjoyed watching any exciting football game and the PGA. Verna loved to do crossword puzzles and did two every day. She enjoyed beating her children at gin rummy and playing cards with her friends.
Verna is survived by her children, Rev. Jerome (Carol) McWaters of Northfield, Jo Ellen (William) Mahn Siemers of Northfield, Dennis McWaters of Zumbrota, Peter (Emily) McWaters of Zumbrota, William (Karen) McWaters of Rochester and Kristine (Douglas) Ryan of Oronoco; fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Duane "Babe"; brothers, Commander Marcus Horn and wife Florence and Rev. Gerhard Horn and wife, Alice; sisters, Leona Borgschatz and husband Elmer and Doris Young and husband Kenneth; son-in-law, Gene Mahn and daughter-in-law, Shirley Burdick-McWaters.
Memorials are preferred to donor's choice.
