Virginia "Ginny" Oberg

June 14, 1929 — April 25, 2019

Virginia "Ginny" Oberg, 89, of Red Wing, died Thursday, April 25, 2019 at St. Crispin Living Community, surrounded by her family. She was born June 14, 1929 to Carl and Augusta (Gehrke) Budenski in Red Wing. She grew up in Minneapolis and attended Minneapolis North High School, graduating in 1947. She met her future husband, Lyman "Jiggs" Oberg, Jr. just after he returned from the service and the couple was married at the Little Brown Church in Iowa in 1948. They moved to Hager City where they farmed and raised their four children. Ginny had many jobs over the years, including town assessor and town treasurer for Trenton Township, a clerk at Hiawatha National Bank, she worked at the Goodhue County courthouse, arranged flowers at the Svea Store, worked in the kitchen at many different restaurants over the years and did the bookwork for a number of businesses, including her son Jay's business, Grand Central Station. Once she and Jiggs sold the farm they moved to Red Wing and later to Aitkin, Minnesota where they spent their retirement around Lake Mille Lacs. Together, they enjoyed traveling, fishing and camping around the lake. Ginny was a talented seamstress and most of the family has the curtains to show for it. She loved to cook and bake for everyone (no one ever left Ginny's house hungry.) Her strawberry jam was amazing and her sugar cookies remain unparalleled. She had a special way with flowers and plants and kept beautiful flower beds. She loved feeding the birds. She enjoyed going to movies and to see live music - she even attended a few country music festivals. Most of all, Ginny loved taking care of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and, of course, her cats.

She is survived by her son, Jay (Judy) Oberg of Hager City; daughter, Cindy (Jim) Ogden of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Nicole (Adam) Peters of Ellsworth, Jolenne (Lenny) Jamison of River Falls, Jay (Robin) Oberg of Plum City, Chris (Dani) Ogden of Maiden Rock and Josh (Hailey) Oberg of Hager City; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Iva Lou Jones of Minneapolis, Shirley Cox of Las Vegas, Betty (Jack) Beggs of Marion, NC and Marlene (Mr. Ed) Eads of Aitkin, MN; one brother-in-law, Jack of Colorado.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jiggs; two sons, David and Gary Oberg; grandson, Jessie Ogden; two sisters, June Holman and Louise Leweke and her parents. Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday May 1, 2019 at Svea Lutheran Church with Rev. Dean Lundgren officiating. Visitation will be 5-8p.m., Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at Trenton Cemetery.
