Walter Harry Banitt

Walter Harry Banitt, 88, died on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at St. Crispin Living Community. He was born on August 27, 1930 in Lake City to Frederick and Clara (Heitman) Banitt. He attended rural school and St. John's School in Lake City before graduating from Lake City High School in 1948. He worked for a few years with his dad. Walter married Dorraine Alms on September 23, 1951 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek. They farmed for many years in Belvidere Township and he sold barn equipment. They moved to Red Wing in 2015, and since May of 2018, he had been a resident of St. Crispin Living Community. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Farm Bureau, and DHIA. Walter enjoyed fishing, driving his Bobcat, and going to Arizona in the winter for over 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Dorraine; seven children, Daniel (Patricia) Banitt of Goodhue, Deborah (Steven) Weinrich of Lake City, Denise (Shelly) Simanski of Red Wing, Dale (Kari) Banitt of Red Wing, Dawn Laffey of Red Wing, Dianne (Daniel) Lee of Goodhue, and Darryl (Lori) Banitt of Cannon Falls; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ann (Donald) Beck of Lake City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dean; three brothers, Ernest, Marvin, and Robert; and one son-in-law, Craig Kurtti.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek with Reverend Lowell Sorenson officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, February 25, 2019 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran Church Building Fund, the American Cancer Society, or Mayo Red Wing Hospice. Funeral arrangements by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
