William Campbell Boyne

A celebration of the life of William Boyne will be held Friday September 22nd from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Canadian Honker Event Center, 1517 16th Street SW, in Rochester. Additionally, a celebration will be held Monday September 25th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at The Weingarten, 1780 E State Route 15, in Belleville, Illinois. Mr. Boyne, 95, of Rochester, died Wednesday August 9, 2017 at his home.

William Campbell Boyne was born April 26, 1922 in East St. Louis, Illinois, the son of Walter and Emily (Campbell) Boyne. He began his career in newspapers while in high school, in 1937, as a part-time sports writer. He attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York for a couple of years, and then enlisted in the Army, serving as a warrant officer on the staff of the 63rd Division in Europe from 1942 to 1946. He then returned to Cornell, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1948. He spent his entire career in newspapers, and began with the Journal in East St. Louis, Illinois. He joined the Post Bulletin in 1979 as general manager, became editor in 1980, and publisher in 1982. He retired in 2003. Under his guidance, the Post Bulletin won the Minnesota Newspaper Association's Vance Trophy five times between 1995 and 2002. He wrote the majority of the newspaper's editorials, and he was active in many community and civic organizations. Among his award winning editorials was a 1st place from the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists for "Mr. President, please slow the rush to war," which coincided with a visit to Rochester by President George W. Bush.

Bill Boyne married Betty Ann Osland in 1943, and she precedes him in death. He married Mary Ann Davis on October 21, 1978 in Belleville, Illinois, and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Ann (Jerry) Bruns of Belleville, IL, Cathie (Jim) Waltermeyer of Jacksonville, FL, Richard (Grace) Boyne of Tucson, AZ, Ellen Boyne (Mike Werele) of Belleville, IL, John Boyne (Leslie Abadie) of Madison, WI, Brian (Glenda) Mueller of Rochester, MN, Cassy Mueller of Rolesville, NC, Matthew Mueller of Rochester, MN, and Amy Mueller (Doug Salinger) of Evergreen, CO; 18 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Walter (Terri) Boyne of Silver Springs, MD.

In addition to his first wife, he is preceded in death by a son, Thomas Boyne; granddaughter Suzanne Bruns; and a brother, Robert Boyne.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Seasons Hospice, the Eagle Bluff Learning Center of Lanesboro, or the Diversity Council of Rochester. And, in Illinois, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Racial Harmony, or St. Vincent, DePaul.
