A. Mary Christensen

Mary Christensen, 95, of Red Wing, died Monday, December 11, 2023 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Marys Campus.  She was born February 28, 1928, in Lloyney, Radnorshire, United Kingdom, the daughter of Thomas Henry and Alice (Gough) Morris. She was a 1945 graduate of Prestiegne High School, Radnorshire, UK, and then graduated as a state registered nurse from Gloucester Royal Hospital, Gloucestershire, UK in 1949.  She was awarded the Silver Medal of her graduation class and was also the recipient of the Third Year Nurses Prize. In 1952 she graduated as a state registered midwife from Cirencester Maternity Hospital, Gloucestershire, UK.  She emigrated to Canada in 1954 where she was employed as a registered nurse at Notre Dame Hospital, North Battleford, Saskatchewan.  In 1959, she came to Red Wing and was employed at the City Hospital until it closed in 1967.  She then worked at the Medical Block Clinic from 1967-1969 and at St. John’s Hospital from 1969 until retirement.  Mary married Leon Christensen in January 1967 at Christ Episcopal Church.  She was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church where she served on the vestry and Eucharistic ministry and was a long-time member of the altar guild and Episcopal Church Women.  In retirement, Mary volunteered with the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross and Anadee’s Closet.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Leon in February 1994; her parents; brothers, Thomas, Clifford, Kenneth and Ronald Morris and sister, Elizabeth Bright.  Mary is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2024, at Christ Episcopal Church.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the church. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
