Barbara M. Kennedy age 89, of Pine Island, died on Wednesday, February 08, 2012 at the Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island. The funeral service will be on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Pine Island with Pastor Carolyn Westlake officiating. Burial will be in Pine Island Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Pine Island and also on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Barbara Mattie Miller was born on September 14, 1922 in Anoka, MN to Albert and Anna (nee Odeen) Miller. Her family moved to the Pine Island area when she was very young. Barbara attended Pumpkin Hollow Country School, Pine Island High School for a short time and she graduated from Kasson High School in 1940. Barbara attended and graduated from a beauty school in St. Paul in 1941. On November 11, 1943 she married Karyl "Curly" Kennedy in Rochester. They farmed north of Pine Island from 1943 - 1955. Barbara also ran her beauty shop, "Barbara's Looking Glass" in Pine Island during this same time span. They moved to Dover and lived there from 1955 to 1960. In 1960 they returned to the Pine Island area and farmed south of Pine Island until retiring in the late 1990's. Barbara continued to live on the farm until the last couple of years. She enjoyed cooking, bird watching, following the Twins and Vikings, her animals on the farm and especially wearing and collecting hats.
Barbara is survived by her son, Mark (Karen) Kennedy of Pine Island; grandchildren, Lisa (Ryan) Foley of Fredonia, WI, Sarah (Adam) Hovden of Kasson, Lacey Kennedy of Rochester and John Kennedy of Pine Island; great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Ian and Jack Foley, Madalyn and Dominic Hovden and Lucille Kennedy. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Karyl "Curly"; son, Michael; sister, Rachael Flormoe; brother, Loren Borgstrom and an infant brother.
