Bertran Edward Gernentz, 83, of Red Wing, died Saturday, April 4, 2015, at his home at Deer Crest. He was born October 23, 1931, in Red Wing, to Bernhard and Gertrude (Friese) Gernentz. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1949 and served in the US Army from 1950 until he was honorably discharged in 1951. On November 28, 1952, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Kinne at the First Presbyterian Church in Red Wing. He worked at Meyer Industries as a welder before beginning his career at Central Research Laboratories, where he worked as a draftsman and programmer until his retirement. Bert was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, the Red Wing Masonic Lodge and Shriners, he helped co-ordinate the Salvation Army bell ringing, was a mentor for the Red Wing Correctional Facility Youth, helped build bird houses for Wildlife League and he enjoyed woodworking and golfing.
He is survived by four children, Jane (Mark) Henning of Eden Prairie, Cari (Dom) Scordo of Lexington, Kentucky, Jon (Katie) Gernentz of Ellsworth and Chris (Tracy) Gernentz of Edina; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and 1 brother, Bernell (Lee) Gernentz of Red Wing. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, in 2014.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Dr. David Reiter officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the church.
