Daniel John McCoy, 71, died Friday, May 8, 2026 at Essential Health, St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
He was born July 22, 1954 in Hastings to Bernard and Margaret McCoy. After school, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1974 and returned to Minnesota.
For most of his working life, Dan traveled all over the country working as a mechanic to large earth moving machines. Dan lived in Red Wing before spending the last years of his life at Hilltop Health Care in Duluth.
Dan had a fantastic smile and he loved visiting with his friends at Hilltop. He especially enjoyed throwing pizza parties for everyone. He enjoyed watching the birds and always made sure they had plenty to eat from the feeders outside of his window. In his younger years he enjoyed his travels for work and enjoyed reminiscing with his friends. He was also a talented artist who enjoyed painting and sketching.
He is survived by his siblings, Katie Birkeland, Tim McCoy, Kevin McCoy and Colleen Marks; sister-in-law, Roxann McCoy; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by siblings, Mary Fox, Dennis McCoy, Mike McCoy, Judi McCoy, David McCoy and an infant brother; as well as his parents, Bernard and Margaret.
A funeral service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, May 21, 2026 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
