Daniel “Dan” Phillip Shea, 75, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Mayo Clinic St. Mary’s Hospital Campus. He was born July 13, 1949 in Lake City, to David and Arlene (Copp) Shea. He graduated from Central High school, class of 1967. Dan played in a local rock’ n’ roll garage band known as the “Gnomes”, later known as the “Soul Survivors”, in 1966 and 1967 with his cousin Jerry Carlson along with three other members.
He later attended the St. Paul Technical Vocational Institute, graduating as a certified Electronic Technician in 1969. He later completed an Associates of Arts at Inver Hills Community College in 1979, a B.S. degree in management from Cardinal Stritch College in 1992, and an M.S. in management in 1993, also from Stritch. Dan worked for Univac for a short time before taking a position as a Test Engineering Manager at VTC Inc. in 1987. He was later employed with Agere systems in Bloomington.
In 1969 Dan married Jill Lynne Erdman on June 28th, 1969 in Red Wing. Together, they enjoyed taking local motorcycle rides on one of the 21 motorcycles Dan owned in his lifetime. Dan and Jill lived in St. Paul before relocating to Burnsville to raise their children. They moved to a hobby farm in Cannon Falls in 2000, and in August of 2024, Dan and Jill moved to Deer Crest Senior Living. Dan enjoyed genealogy, and compiled a book of Shea family history. He also enjoyed motorcycling, hunting, guitar, bird watching, reading, computers, woodworking and fixing appliances of every kind. He also enjoyed clearing and maintaining the ATV and dirtbike trails on their property.
Dan is survived by his wife, Jill; one daughter, Gretchen (Daniel) Weatherly of Hammond, Wi.; three sons Benjamin (Amy) Shea of Lakeville, David (Melissa) Shea of Savage, Peter (Dawn) Shea of Pine Island; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, David (Genivieve) Shea of Red Wing, and Dean (Robert Taylor) Shea of Minneapolis; and many other relatives and friends . He is preceded in death by his parents, David and Arlene Shea; and brother Neil who died in infancy.
A Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m. Friday, October 18, 2024 at The Church of St. Joseph in Red Wing, with visitation one hour prior to service. A private family burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lake City. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (https://pancan.org/ ) or donor’s choice.
