David Leon Mathison

David Leon Mathison passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Monday, December 25, 2023.  David was born March 5, 1950, in Rochester, MN, to Alton and Geneva (Smock) Mathison.  He attended Grand Meadow schools where he participated in wrestling. David was united in marriage to Sharon Olson on May 31, 1969. Over the years, he owned and operated Dave’s Tree Service, farmed, and was a boilerman for the city of Red Wing.  David had a passion for horses.  He was a longtime member of the Pine Island Saddle Club and a regular on Wednesday rides.  He enjoyed nothing more than going on rides with his children and grandchildren. Despite living with multiple sclerosis, David refused to complain or let it stop him from living life to the fullest.  He treasured his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren.

David is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sharon; children, Cory (Lynn) Mathison, Angela (John) Bovia, Andrea (Jesse) Klavetter, Ashley (Luke) Bibby; grandchildren, John, Andrew, Jada, Breanna, Britany, Braxton, Olivia, Brayson, and Claire; great grandchildren, JoAnna and Emersyn; siblings, Audrey, Lillian, Laverne, Cliff, Jim, Vince and Tom. He is also survived by his beloved horse, “Rocky”.

David was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 30, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, in Zumbrota, with Pastor Eric Westlake officiating.  Visitation will be one and a half hours prior to the service at the church.  Online condolences are welcome and may be shared at mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
