Obituary

David McCormick, 89, of Lake City, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at the Elysian Senior Home of Lake City.

Dave was born April 13, 1936 in Faribault, MN to Edward & Lydia (Reimann) McCormick, the youngest of 8 children. Upon graduating from high school, Dave received his bachelor's degree from Heidelberg University in Ohio, and eventually his master’s degree from Winona State University. Dave married Caroline Dunn August 27, 1960 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Faribault. The couple first lived in Hills, Minnesota, before moving to Lake City in 1962 when Dave accepted a teaching position—making Lake City their lifelong home.

In addition to his teaching career that involved a semester teaching abroad in Latvia, Dave worked constantly. Whether taking tickets at school sporting events, announcing at wrestling matches and horse shows, teaching driver’s education, or even installing TV antennas, he embraced every opportunity to work. His strong work ethic continued long after his retirement from teaching in 1993. Dave never truly stopped working and held several full‑time jobs well into his 80s. When he did take time for himself, he was an avid reader and a proud member of Carnelian Lodge No. 40, part of the Minnesota Freemasons, for over 50 years. During the 1970’s he was very involved with the Lake City Waterski Days committee, the 1972 Centennial Committee, and in 1976 Dave formally presented the “Wave” water ski fountain monument to the city at a dedication ceremony in Ohuta Park. He was also a strong supporter and member of the Lake City Education Association, and the Congregational Church — serving on several committees and boards.

Dave is survived by his 4 children: Kathy, David II (Kristin Pichelman), John (Tracy), all of Lake City; and James (Nancy) of St. Charles; 6 grandchildren: Marissa (Sam) Pollock, Alex McCormick (Emma), Ryan McCormick, Halle (Simon) Warmkagathje, Abbie (James) McGee, Laura (Jake Markgraf) Buckman; 6 great-grandchildren: Carson, Vaeda, and Everlie McGee, Maverick and Mila Pollock, Indy McCormick, sister-in-law, Kathy Williams; brother-in-law, Jim McGraw; sister-in-law, Shirlie Dunn; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Caroline; his siblings and their spouses: John McCormick, Lloyd (Ruth) McCormick, Don (Jackie) McCormick, Phyllis (Erv) Nems, Pat (Wes) Fink, Joan (Frank) Westpfahl, and Dorothy (Don) Matakis.

A memorial service will be held February 7, 2026 at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Lake City with Reverend David Badgley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Lakewood Cemetery. Online condolences can be sent to
