David Jacob Spain

Lake City, MN

David Jacob Spain, 83 of Lake City, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly on May 5, 2024. He was born Aug 3, 1940 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to Bernard and Lucy (Kueber) Spain. 

David graduated from Sacred Heart High School, East Grand Forks, MN and earned both a bachelor’s and master’s in education from Valley City State and the University of North Dakota, respectively

David met the love of his life – Diana “Suzie” Suzanne Hartl (nee Sterling) while working for the Anoka-Hennepin School District. They were married in March 1978 and bought a home in Andover, MN, that same year.

David and Suzie moved to Princeton, MN in 1989, where they spent just over two years renovating a turn-of-the-century Victorian home into a B&B. During and after the renovations he continued to work for the Anoka-Hennepin School District, retiring in 1999.

David and Suzie moved to Lake City in 2012, to again renovate a historic home into a B&B. 

David was an active member of the Lions Club for many years in Anoka, Princeton, and Lake City. He was also active with the American Legion in Lake City and a member of the Eagles Club in East Grand Forks.

David was a devout catholic and a member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, (vegetable) gardening, and woodworking. He was a very loving and supportive husband and father; and will be greatly missed. 

David is survived by his wife; sons, Benjamin Spain, Los Angeles, CA and John (Becca) Spain, Red Wing, MN; stepson, Geoffrey Hartl; and step grandson; Nathan Hartl, both of Crystal, MN. Sister, Jeannine Spain, Crookston, MN, and brother-in-law Benjamin (Betty) Sterling, Bozeman, MT.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Charles. 

A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 10th at 11 AM at St. Mary’s of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake City with Father The Hoang officiating. Vastation will be from 10 to 11 Friday at the church. The service will be lived streamed on the Mahn Family Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. On Line Condolences may be placed at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
