Edmund L. Patlan, 95, of Red Wing, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Elysian Fields of Red Wing, surrounded by his family. He was born August 18, 1930, in Crystal City, Texas, to Antero and Emiliana (Lopez) Patlan and grew up in Carrizo Springs, Texas where he graduated from high school. Following high school, he attended University of Texas, Southwest Texas State and then made his way to Chicago, where he attended Chicago State University. While living there, he reconnected with a family friend, Mary Ellen Duran. They were united in marriage on July 29, 1956 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Carrizo Springs, Texas. They lived in Chicago and their marriage was blessed with four children, Stephen, Gilbert, Sandra and Diana. Edmund began working part time for Mt. Sinai Hospital in Hematology, while simultaneously attending college and working full time at Fleishman Malting Company, where he began a 40-year career with the company. In 1977, he and his family moved to Red Wing, where he became the plant manager at Fleischman Malting, which became a subsidiary of ADM. He retired in 1996. His faith and his church were very important to him. He believed in helping those in need. He was a charter member of Hispanic Ministry at St. Josephs, which evolved into Hispanic Outreach. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Century Club.
Baseball was always a love of Edmund’s but reading, studying and researching was something he did his entire life, whether it was researching the players and coaches for the MN Vikings and Twins or learning family history. He was an avid reader and had dreams of being an author.
He is survived by his children, Stephen (Julie), Sandy (Keith) and Diana (Brian); grandchildren, Amanda (Richie), Lauren (Nate), Anthony, Christopher (Margriet), Elena (Coleman) and step granddaughter Desiree; two step great-granddaughters, Sarah and Bonnie; siblings, Antero Jr. (Jeanette), Ninfa, Rosa, Amanda and Leticia (Eloy) and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary Ellen and siblings, Maria Luisa, Olivia and Juan and in-laws, Jerry, Elena, Julian, Elvin, and Marcos.
Mass of the Resurrection will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Church of St. Joseph with Father Brandon Theisen presiding. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at a later date. Memorials are preferred to Hispanic Outreach, the Church of St. Joseph or the local food shelf.
