Garry Erwin Nietz, 78, of Zumbrota, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026, at Mayo Clinic Health System – St. Marys Campus, surrounded by the love of his family. Garry lived a life defined by faith, integrity, service, and devotion to those he loved most. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose steady presence brought comfort and strength to many. Garry was born on September 27, 1947, in Rochester, to Erwin and Lucille Nietz. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1965 and from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 1969. That same year, he enlisted in the United States Navy and entered the Naval Aviation school in Pensacola, Florida. On August 22, 1970, he married the love of his life, Rosanne Foss, in Preston. Together they shared 55 wonderful years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, loyalty, laughter, and family. Garry was a man of principle — A Boy Scout and military man at heart, structured, dependable, optimistic, and kind. He lived with quiet integrity and strong faith, always grateful for life and the people around him. He found joy in the simple things: wearing his favorite jeans and sweatshirts, tackling handyman projects at home or at the cabin, and spending peaceful hours by the lake with Rosanne and family. Those who knew him best knew that these were the moments when he was most content.
He was a loving father to his son, Dan (Bretta) Nietz of Zumbrota, and daughter, Jean (Dominic) Ciola of Excelsior, Minnesota. He was a proud and cherished grandfather to Anna, Maren, and Stefan Nietz; Vito, Vinny, and Gianna Ciola; and Dane and Hans Damson. He is also survived by his sister, Judy (Jack) Lane of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Lucille, and his sister, Nancy.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 6, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at United Redeemer Lutheran Church in Zumbrota, MN with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. A private burial will take place at a later date at Zumbrota Cemetery. We will miss his voice, his wisdom, and the steady love of his presence. Though gone from our sight, he will never be gone from our hearts.
