Hazel K. Vukmir, 98, of Red Wing, died Monday, May 12, 2025, at her home at Deer Crest Senior Living, surrounded by family. She was born on February 19, 1927, in Keystone, PA to John and Thressa (Sarsfield) Kistler. She graduated from Norwin High School in Irwin, PA in 1945. In 1949, she received a Bachelor of Science degree from Slippery Rock University in Butler, PA. She was a member of the Phi Delta Pi and active in many sports while attending college. For 28 years, she was a teacher in Sharon and East McKeesport, PA.
On July 19, 1958, she was united in marriage to Andrija “Andy” Vukmir. With Andy’s employment at Westinghouse Nuclear Power Division, they traveled a lot. They resided in several states and also in Baden, Switzerland and Varberg, Sweden over the years.
Hazel enjoyed golf, playing tennis, hiking, walking and bicycling. She was an avid reader; wood carver and bird watcher and she looked forward to traveling. Springtime was a special time, which gave her the opportunity to check out all the wild flowers.
Hazel volunteered many hours at St. John’s Hospital in Red Wing and Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park in Homosassa, FL where she and Andy wintered at for 20 years.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Andy; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Vladimir Vukmir and sister-in-law, Georgeanne Vukmir. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Faye McCracken.
Burial will be at a later date in Brush Creek Cemetery in Irwin, PA. Arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing, MN.
