Irene Florence Westerberg, 91, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Mille Lacs Health Systems in Onamia. She was born January 17, 1933 in Davenport, Iowa to Donald and Mary (Jones) Micholichek. The family then moved to Minneapolis where Irene attended high school. After graduation she went to work at Pink Supply Company where she met her husband, Dwelton E. Westerberg. The couple was married at the Hennepin County courthouse on August 25, 1953. Together they raised 8 children. They moved to Coon Rapids in 1969 and then in 1977 they moved to Red Wing and purchased the Hiawatha Ballroom. They ran the ballroom until a fire in 1983. In 2002 Dwelton passed away. While she never remarried, she was engaged to Julian "JR" Olson until the time of her passing. For most of her life, Irene was a homemaker, wonderful mother and grandmother. She loved her children and always put them first. She was a member of the Church of St. Joseph in Red Wing and the Ladies Birthday Club. She enjoyed writing stories and poetry and had both a story book and a book of poems published. She loved animals, especially her beloved pets. She liked to do a bit of gambling and was always excited to play cards with her grandkids.
She will be missed by many, including her children; Andy (Cathy), Marlene (Gary) Albrecht, Debi (Jim) Thuman, Tommy (Lycia), Buddy (Shelly), Beverly (Chad) Grieger, and daughter-in-law, DeeAnna Westerberg; fiancé, Julian Olson; sister, Patty (Steve) Denzer; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; other family and many friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dwelton; sons, Frank and Charles; great-grandson, Tristan Westerberg; sister, Shirley Bahns; and her parents.
A Mass of Resurrection will be 11 a.m., Friday, April 12, 2024 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Brandon Theisen presiding. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Thursday, April 11, 2024 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at Stockholm Cemetery.
