James Owen Redman

January 10, 1947 — May 9, 2015

James Owen Redman, 68, of Red Wing died on May 9th. He was born in Red Wing, Minnesota to Owen and Bernice (Erickson) Redman.

He married Cynthia Maynard, his high school sweetheart from Red Wing Central High School. He attended the University of Washington as a freshman and then returned home to the University of Minnesota where he graduated with a B.A. in History. Not only did his time at the U of MN stimulate a life-long love of history, he bled maroon and gold for the rest of his life, cheering on the Gophers at every opportunity. As an ROTC graduate he was commissioned into the Army, spending 13 months stationed overseas on the DMZ in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division.

Following his military service, he completed a law degree at William Mitchell School of Law, and was a practicing attorney for over thirty years. He served as President of the St. Paul Council of Churches where he advocated for unity, inclusion, and equality of all faiths.

He loved both telling and hearing good stories, and had an unparalleled love of adventure. His memorable travels included reindeer driving school in Finland, a hunting trip to Estonia, sleeping in a Viking longhouse in Greenland, and sailing on a 19th century mast ship in France.

He loved hunting and fishing - being outside was a passion of his and - like his father and grandfather - he supported numerous environmental and preservation causes over many years. He taught his children it is always possible to grow, learn, and change as a person. He was an amazing dad, husband, friend, and human being. We will miss him tremendously.

He is survived by his wife Cynthia, daughter Elisa of St. Paul, son Sam and daughter-in-law Emily of Amherst, MA, sister Nancy Carlson (David) of Willmar, MN, sister-in-law Linda Jacobs of Highland Park, IL, and beloved cousins Julie and Tom Currie of Lake George, NY.

The family is honoring him with a private graveside burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Red Wing. A celebration of his life for his friends and family will be held at the Anderson Center in Red Wing on Saturday, June 6 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family is organizing a scholarship fund in his honor for history students at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Donations can be directed to the James and Cynthia Redman Scholarship, Department of History, Herter Hall Room 612, University of Massachusetts, 161 Presidents Drive, Amherst, MA 01003-9312.

Please either note the James and Cynthia Redman Scholarship into memo line on a check or write the same into the "Special Gift Instructions or Comments" box after following the instructions under "Online" via this website - http://www.umass.edu/history/giving/index.html.
