Jeanette Viola Savage, 78, of Red Wing, died Monday, October 10, 2016, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester. She was born December 8, 1937 in Red Wing to Seneca and Alice (McKinley) VanGuilder. She grew up and attended school in Red Wing before marring Philip Savage in Frontenac in 1963. Together she and Philip raised their family in Red Wing. She was a sales clerk at Spurgeon's Department Store for more than 20 years. She also worked for the Red Wing Shoe Co. and Ben Franklin. Philip died in 1974.
Jeanette was a people person and would talk to anyone. She loved shopping and could turn a five-minute shopping trip into an all day excursion. Although she never had her license she always enjoyed going for a drive with her family or friends. Most of all, spending time with her grandchildren was what she truly cherished.
Jeanette is survived by her son, Alan (Caroline) Savage of Red Wing; step-daughter, Wanda (James) Lee; 4 grandchildren, Mackenzie, Melissa, Racheal and Avry and step grandchildren, Tony Savage and Valerie Lee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip; brothers, Gerald, Kermith and Dennis VanGulder; sisters, Bonnie Pfingsten and Vivian Richter and a nephew, Bob Richter.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Rev. Bill Bradley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of memorials and per Jeanette's request, all those attending are asked to wear purple if possible, just not black.
