Jeanne Delores Oettel, 82, of Red Wing, passed away peacefully, supported by her family and hospice nursing care, on Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the Lake City Care Center in Lake City. She was born on December 24, 1933, in Duluth, Minnesota to Alf and Louise Fossum. She was the 4th of six children. She graduated from Hermantown High School in 1951. In 1953 she married Russell Oettel in Duluth. She lived and worked in St. Paul, Minnesota, Iron River, Michigan and Hurley and Wausau, Wisconsin before settling in Door County for nearly 30 years.
In Door County she worked at Wipfil Ulrich and Newman Insurance and Realty where she obtained a broker's license. She continued her career in office management at American Family Insurance and finally at Schreiber Foods before retiring in 1997. She had many interests including traveling, decorating, antique shopping and spending time with her family and friends. She was an adored wife, mother, sister and aunt, an energetic and engaging grandmother and a loyal and supportive friend. She was also known for her strong work ethic, generous hospitality, admirable organizational and management skills and her positive attitude. Jeanne was a member of United Lutheran Church and had volunteered at the Red Wing Mayo Clinic as a valet attendant and at the Red Wing Public Library.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 63 years, Russell Oettel of Red Wing, her son Kurt (Barbara) Oettel of La Crosse, Wisconsin; one sister, Violet (Anderson) Fossum of White Bear Lake and one brother Duane (Patricia) Fossum of Lakeville. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Bailey Oettel, Sydney Oettel and McKenna Oettel of La Crosse and Andrew Oettel of Green Bay.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alf and Louise Fossum; her brothers, Earl and Dale Fossum; one sister Arlene (Bloom) Fossum and one son, Eric Oettel.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2016 at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Justin Boeding officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the served at the church, In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society. Jeanne's family would like to thank the staff at the Lake City Care Center for their excellent care and thoughtfulness during her time there.
