Jim R. Swanson

Jim Ray Swanson, 56, of Ellsworth, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 4th, 2025, at his home. He was born on November 7th, 1968, in River Falls, WI to Leo P. and Donna (Patraw) Swanson and attended schools in Ellsworth. During his working years, he drove taxi before going on to work for several road construction companies. He eventually moved on to become the general manager of a restaurant and was particularly proud of this work. He married Bernadette Denn and to this union they had two children, Rachel and Leo. They later divorced. Jim enjoyed being outdoors and spent as much of his life as he could fishing and hunting. He had a large heart for animals, often releasing captured raccoons and helping take in stray cats. He best loved the animals that may be considered odd or unlovable, including his pet lizard, Tia, whom he loved dearly and could often be seen traveling with. Most of all, he enjoyed any opportunity to be with his family, especially his children. Jim will be remembered by those who knew him for his infectious laugh, big heart, and the immense love that he had for his family.

He is survived by his two children, Rachel (Ben) Norgaard and Leo (Serenity) Swanson; one grandson, Lincoln Norgaard; his mother, Donna Barr; siblings, Leo (Karen) Swanson, Tammy (Mark) Worthey, Teresa (Mike) Kohlnhofer, and Steve (Judy) Yarrington; half-siblings, Suzie Patraw, Shirley Sternagel, Char Swanson, and Gail Swanson; along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo, and half-sisters Polly, Patty, and Nanette.

A celebration of life will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, November 15th at the Diamond Bluff Town Hall. You are encouraged to wear your bright green or camo colors. In lieu of cut flowers, plants or planting a tree is preferred. Arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Ellsworth Chapel.
