Joel N. Bjorngaard age 89, of Wanamingo, died on Saturday evening, March 10, 2012 at the Zumbrota Health Services where he had resided for one day. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo with Pastor Christopher Culuris officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date. The visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 14, 2012 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Joel Norman Bjorngaard was born on April 17, 1922 in Roscoe Township, Goodhue County, MN to Ned and Tomina "Minnie" (nee Grove) Bjorngaard. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. On September 2, 1944 he married LaVonne Haller at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo. They made their home in Red Wing and Joel worked for the Red Wing Shoe Factory and was a mechanic at the International Harvester dealer. In 1947 they moved back to Wanamingo to farm with Joel's brothers and later he became an electrician. Joel was known for fixing anything he got his hands on and was always ready with a good joke. He loved to cook, fish, hunt and spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Joel is survived by his wife of 67 years, LaVonne; three daughters, Jackie (Tom) Auseth of Wanamingo, Becky (Kerry) Jones of New Town Square, PA. and Sara (Marlin) Rude of Zumbrota; grandchildren, Christine (Jon) Houglum, Jen Jones, Dan (Erika) Jones, Darik (Minde) Rude, Andy (Krystle) Rude and Kelsey Rude; four great grandchildren, Erin and Matthew Houglum and Nolan and Norah Rude; two brothers, Norman (Joan) Bjorngaard of Wanamingo and Vernon Bjorngaard of Zumbrota; three sisters, Loretta Broas of Zumbrota, Rose Durhman of Zumbrota and Sharon Bjorngaard of Zumbrota. Joel was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Thelma Bjorngaard.
