Larry Horlitz

July 9, 1958 — October 22, 2025

Red Wing

Lawrence “Larry” William Horlitz, 67, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 9, 1958, in Red Wing to Lawrence and DeLoris (Smith) Horlitz. His father died in 1965 and his mom later married Bob Tubbesing, who was a loving father to him. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School and then attended and graduated from Northland College in Ashland, WI with a degree in Outdoor Education. A college highlight was replacing his graduation ceremony with a trip home from college in a canoe, which ended up being an adventure of a lifetime, where Lake Superior “put him in his place”. He met the love of his life, Pam Morton, and they were united in marriage on November 28, 1981 in Sioux Falls, SD. Larry worked a short time at Excel Energy, Red Wing Shoe Company and Goodhue County Sheriff's Office before fulfilling his lifelong dream to be a third-generation firefighter for the Red Wing Fire Department. During that time, he served as a captain, paramedic and a member of the SWAT team, making lifelong friends that were family to him.

Larry loved the outdoors, whether it was hiking, hunting, exploring the Cannon Bottoms, or time spent on the river. With his health no longer able to support him in the things he loved doing, he returned to “glamping.” He and Pam were hosts for nine years at the Village of Stockholm Campground. There he found a new purpose in life, along with friends and the opportunity to continue to enjoy eagles and the driftless region.

Larry was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, a 42-year member of the Red Wing Elks, BPOE #845 where he served as an Exalted Ruler, Red Wing Wildlife League and Sons of Legionnaires. He will be remembered for his generosity, sense of humor, kindness and the love he shared with his family and friends.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Pam, two daughters, Katelyn (Chad) and Jill (Eric); six grandchildren, Torin, Walter, Milton, Lois, Keegan and Alaina; three sisters, Meredith (Tom) Everett, Pam Skorude and Dawn Tubbesing along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents DeLoris and Bob Tubbesing and Lawrence Horlitz.

To honor Larry’s wishes in lieu of a service, the family invites you to celebrate his life by sharing time with those you love, appreciating nature that surrounds you. Memorials are preferred to the Environmental Learning Center (www.redwingelc.com). A special thanks to the Mayo Clinic Hospice staff who made the last months of his life comfortable.

Arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
