Larry “Lars” Alan Mandelkow, age 69 of Vasa, died on Sunday afternoon, June 7, 2026 at home with family by his side.
Larry was born on February 15, 1957 in Red Wing, the son of Lyle and Norma (Winberg) Mandelkow. He graduated in 1975 from Red Wing Central High School.
On March 3, 1978 he married Diane Nobach at Vasa Lutheran Church. They met as neighbors when she lived just up the road, sparking a love story that lasted for 50 years. They shared a wonderful life on the farm in Vasa Township, raising three children and building countless, lasting memories.
He farmed the majority of his life while also working winter months at Welch Village Ski Area. During the summer months he worked road construction for Arcon in Harris, MN and later worked for Luhman’s Construction in Welch, MN until his retirement in 2020.
He was a proud grandpa to his nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His heart was fullest when surrounded by family and he took immense pride in watching his children and grandchildren grow into who they are today. He looked forward to watching them participate in the neighborhood tractor drives and the annual 4th of July Vasa parade.
He will be sadly missed by many, including his wife, Diane; children; Angie Metling (Mike Hedeen) of Welch, Adam (Eva) of West Plains, MO, and Andrew of Red Wing; grandchildren, Collin (Morgan) Metling, Cameron, Mason, Tristin, Emma, Tucker, Kylie, Rylan, William; great-grandchild, Henry Metling; and Brandie Davis, whom he considered a bonus daughter; sister, Judy Scripture; in-laws, Edward and Jacqueline Nobach; sisters-in-law, Patti (Rod) Petrie, Cheri (Brian) Rumpza, Judy Nobach and Caroline Nobach; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Scott and Gary; sister-in-law, Terri Mandelkow; brothers-in-law, Ed and Tony Nobach, Ron Scripture.
