Louise M. Mewhorter

Louise Melida Mewhorter, 88, of Red Wing, died Monday, June 29, 2026, at the Benedictine Living Community. She was born July 19, 1937, in Red Wing, to Alfonso and Dahlia (Peterson) Much. She grew up in Trenton Island, Wisconsin and graduated from Red Wing Central High School, class of 1955. She married Gearld Mewhorter on March 31, 1956, at First Lutheran Church. She and Gerald spent three months in Virginia, while he finished his service time with the Navy and the two returned to Red Wing, where they made their home and welcomed two children, Vicki and Daniel. Louise worked for Prudential Insurance, Sears, Food Bonanza and she also worked as a Special Education teacher’s aide in Red Wing and Wanamingo. She was a part of the Fairview Hospital Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. As a member of First Lutheran Church, she taught bible school and played piano for the Saturday evening services. She also provided piano and accordion music at the local nursing homes as well as Jordan Towers and Deer Crest. In her free time, Louise enjoyed creating greeting cards, writing poetry and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Vicki (Mike) Steier of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; granddaughter, Sheena and her children Jayden and Kenny and granddaughter, Shelby (Dylan) and their children, Brantley and Talen. She is also survived by siblings, Steven Much, Andrew (Susan) Much and Isabel Karon (Lester) and a sister-in-law, Sandy Much.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Daniel; infant brother, Kenneth; brothers, Edwin and William Much and her husband, Gerald in 2021.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Rev. Quinlan Koch officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery.
