Marcia Mae Matthees, 81, of Goodhue, died Friday, September 20, 2024 at her home in Cannon River Senior Living Community in Cannon Falls. She was born May 11, 1943 in Red Wing to Albert and Esther (Vieths) Diercks. She grew up on the family farm in Goodhue and graduated from Goodhue High School in 1961. She went on to Bethany Lutheran College where she earned a degree in education. On September 11, 1965 she married Raymond Matthees at St. Johns Lutheran Church in rural Goodhue. When her youngest was entering preschool, she began working at St. John's Lutheran School as the preschool teacher. She taught for St. John's, shepherding hundreds of little ones in the love of Lord for 40 years. She was a life long member of St. Johns and, despite her busy schedule as a teacher, served in the choir and helped with Ladies Aid. She was gifted in music and taught piano, organ and even the accordion.
Marcia loved to bake buns and cook for her family. She loved visiting with friends and family. She was a member of a card club and loved a good game of 500. She made friends with her Mennonite neighbors and maintained those friendships for the rest of her life. Raymond died in 2011 and following his death, Marcia sold the farm and moved to town in Goodhue. She loved her townhome but her favorite part was being able driving her golf cart around town. She may have been a bit loose with her regard to traffic laws but she had fun. When she moved to Cannon River, she quickly became a popular resident. She was like a mother to many of the aids and a dear friend and caretaker to many of the residents. She enjoyed happy hour and playing bingo.
She loved being a grandmother and attended as many of her grandchildren's sporting events as possible. She was a wonderful teacher, caretaker, and friend and she will be missed by many.
She is survived by her daughters; Debra (Steve) Langerud of Underwood, Minn., Dawn (Jerry) Lunde of Frazee, Minn., and Joy (David) Miller of Goodhue; 8 grandchildren; Lance (Ryan) Langem, Tyler (Jana) Lunde, Luke (Amber) Langerud, Mikayla Miller, Taylor Lunde, Madison Miller, Cameron (Leah) Lunde, and Tori Miller; 5 great-grandchildren; Blair Ingebrigtson, Ellie, Lee and Logan Langrud, and Kaelyn Miller; two siblings, Rita Jurgens and Gary (Phyllis) Diercks; sister-in-law, Judy Sterns; as well as many nieces, nephews, other family, beloved former students, and many friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; their son, Jonathan; and siblings, Gail, John, and Rebecca Diercks; niece, Tricia Kyllo; nephew, Brent Diercks; sister-in-law, Betty Berry
