Marcus Sheldon Mitchell, 52, of Red Wing, died Thursday, July 14, 2022, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Red Wing. He was born June 2, 1970, in Chicago, Illinois, to Tyrone and Valerie (Gary) Mitchell. He grew up in Chicago Heights and graduated from Bloom High School. He enlisted in the US Army Reserves prior to taking culinary school classes and worked as a chef for several restaurants throughout the years. He moved to the LaCrosse, Wisconsin area and then to Winona, Minnesota, where he worked in social services at Many Rivers Juvenile Detention Center. It was here he met his wife, Tracy McGinley, and they were married on April 6, 2002. They moved to Lake City, Minnesota, where they raised their family and recently, moved to Red Wing in 2018. Marcus worked for Dakota County Detox and the Cochrane Recovery Program and had also been a chef at Tado Steakhouse.
Marcus had a huge love of music, movies and cars. Cooking was his passion and he was often telling his family “you have put love in your food” or it just wouldn’t be right. To many, he was a mentor and was always looking out for others, and if you were lucky, you’d get one of his hugs.
Those hugs will be missed greatly by his family, including his wife, Tracy Mitchell; 4 children, Richard Mitchell, Kevin (Kaitlyn Pasche-Meyer) McGinley, Marcus Mitchell, Jr. and Mataya Mitchell; 3 grandchildren, Mila, Max and Mahli; his mother, Dr. Valerie Jackson; 3 brothers, Anton (Kathy) Mitchell, Andre Mitchell and Tyrone “TJ” Mitchell, Jr.; step-mother, Joanne Mitchell and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father, Tyrone.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, July 23, 2022 at New River Assembly of God Church. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
