Marilyn LaRae Thompson, 88, of Red Wing, died Sunday, November 9, 2025, at her residence at the Benedictine Living Community- the Villa. She was born on May 31, 1937, in Red Wing to Glen and Lillian (Jackson) St. John. She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1955. On September 8, 1956, she was united in marriage to Luverne Thompson. They lived a few years in St. Paul and in 1960, moved to a farm in Hay Creek Township. She furthered her education and received her LPN nursing degree. She worked a number of years for St. John’s Hospital and the Red Wing Health Center. After taking an upholstery class, she decide to upholster furniture. For many years she owned and operated Thompson Upholstery.
As an active member of United Lutheran Church in Red Wing, Marilyn contributed her time and talents to the funeral serving committee and served in Circle. She was a friendly visitor with Faith in Action and participated in Project, an initiative of the Goodhue County Extension service. Marilyn was known for her exceptional skills in the kitchen, where she delighted family and friends with her cooking and baking. She had a passion for entertaining, always setting a beautiful table with her fine china, creating memorable moments filled with friendship and laughter. Her zest for life extended to shopping, especially for jewelry. Most importantly her family was the center of her life. Her family recalls many fond memories of the times they shared together over the years.
Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Theresa (Scott) Will; three grandchildren, Zachary (TaNesha) Will, Lauren (Steven) Strauss and Lydia Will; six grandchildren, William, Greta, Vivian, Walter, Henry and Griffin; sister-in-law, Lois Wipperling; brother-in-law, Morris Thompson along with many beautiful nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Lynn Thompson; two sisters, Dorothy Rose and Dolly McCall and one brother, Chuck McCusker.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at United Lutheran Church with Reverend Justin Boeding officiating. Burial will be at the Vasa Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
