Marlene C. Hernlem, 90, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Elysian Fields in Red Wing. She was born on January 26, 1935, in Red Wing to Erwin and Verneil (Buck) Voth. She grew up in the Bellechester area, attended District #101, Grace Lutheran Church School, and graduated from Goodhue High School in 1952. On December 28, 1958, she was united in marriage to Ernest Hernlem at St. John’s Lutheran Church rural Goodhue. They were blessed with three children, Cynthia, Gina, and Bradley. Marlene worked for SB Foot Tannery, Jostens, and retired from Citizens Security. She loved to garden, and in her later years, took up watercolor painting.
Marlene is survived by her three children, Cynthia Degener, Gina Hernlem, and Bradley (Birgita Jean) Hernlem; four grandchildren, Jonathan Glass, Alexandra Glass, Evan Degener, and Sohrab Bazargannia; three step-grandchildren, Edward Valdes, Natasha Walker, and Celeste Fors; four great grandchildren, Makenzi, James, Aonica, and Mina Rae and five step-great grandchildren, Ares, Sven, Robyn, Teddy, and Conor; one sister, Bonnie Voth; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2019, and one brother, Larry Voth.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Peter Sternberg officiating. Burial will be at the Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Red Wing or St. Croix Hospice. Arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
