Marlys Irene Alms, 94, of Red Wing, died Thursday, May 30, 2024 at The Benedictine Living Community. She was born December 7, 1929 in Lake City, to Elmer and Evelyn (Issendorf) Wiebusch. She was baptized and confirmed at Lincoln Trinity Lutheran Church. She attended Red Wing Central High School. On January 1, 1948 she married Donald Alms in Red Wing. She and Donald raised 5 children. While her children were growing up, she was primarily a homemaker but she also waitressed at various places in the area. Once her youngest was in school she became a cook for the Red Wing School District.
Marlys was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Axillary and the Red Men Club. She bowled on a league for many years and took up golfing after she turned 60. She enjoyed crafting and made quilts and jewelry for her children and grandchildren. She also joined the Quilters Club when she moved to Jordan Towers. She loved playing cards and bingo. After Donald died in 1995, she and her friends enjoyed traveling together.
She is survived by her children; Bob (Mary) of Red Wing, Steve of Eagan, Minn., Randy (Jackie) of Red Wing; Carol (Gene) Weid of Stillwater, Minn. and Bonnie (Bob) Harding of Rochester; 8 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; and one sister, Marcene O’Brien-Myrman of Altoona, Wisc.
She is preceded in death by her husband; great-grandson, Adam Harding; and her parents.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, June 6, 2024 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Pastor Todd Engel officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at church.
