Marlys Marie (Ohnstad) Mickelson, 76, of Red Wing, died Friday, December 30, 2022 at the Lake City Care Center surrounded by her family. She was born January 14, 1946 in Red Wing to Marvin and Viola (Sager) Ohnstad.
Her first few years were spent at a farm in Leon Township. Her family then moved to Cannon Falls. She graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1964. She moved to Minneapolis and went to the Minnesota School of Business and then worked at Travelers Express Money Order Co. While living in the cities she would come home on weekends and attend Old Time Dances. This is where she met her husband, Clarence Mickelson. They were married on March 15, 1969. They farmed for about 35 years in Belvidere Township. They were member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church where Marlys was active in Ladies Aid. She also belonged to the Belva-Dears Extension Group. They moved to Red Wing shortly after Marlys began working as a teacher’s aide in the Red Wing Public Schools. The couple raised 3 sons.
Her son Christopher and husband, Clarence, both passed away on the same day, October 11, 24 years apart.
Since living in Red Wing, she has enjoyed going to the YMCA and volunteering at the Red Wing Health Center. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandson, especially playing board games together.
Marlys was a wonderful mother and grandmother and she was an incredibly strong woman. She had a great sense of humor and a good natured, but direct way of telling you what she thought of something. She also enjoyed collecting angels.
She is survived by her sons, Brad Mickelson of Red Wing and Jeff (Veronica) Mickelson of Goodhue; one grandson, Carson Mickelson; and brother, Allen Ohnstad of Faribault; as well as many cousins, other family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband; Clarence Mickelson; one son, Christopher Mickelson; and her parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, January 5th, 2023 at St. Peter’s Belvidere with Reverend Steven Frenz officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, January 4th, 2023 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial at the church cemetery. A special thank you to her nieces for all their help and love. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
